What is Rebuilding Together–Savannah?

Rebuilding Together-Savannah repairs existing houses for low-income homeowners, bringing volunteers and communities together to improve homes, lives and neighborhoods. RT Savannah is a local affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, headquartered in Washington, DC. In 2010, Rebuilding Together nationally anticipates 250,000 volunteers donating their time and skills to rehabilitate 10,000 houses and non-profit facilities. This will bring the organization’s cumulative impact to 100,000 plus houses and non-profit facilities repaired by more than 3 million volunteers. The first Rebuilding Day in Savannah in 1997 repaired seven homes, and as of 2009, we have repaired more than 200 homes in the Savannah/Chatham area with an equivalent local impact of more than one million dollars!


Why is Rebuilding Together–Savannah needed?

Rebuilding Together Savannah is needed because the number of low-income homeowners increases each year. Nationally, the current 24 million low-income homeowner families are expected to grow to an astonishing 28. 5 million by the year 2010. In the City of Savannah alone, it is estimated that more than 4,400 homes currently meet this definition of need. More and more families are placed in the position of choosing between vital necessities such as food or medicine and a roof that does not leak. Elderly or disabled homeowners often cannot afford the modifications to allow them to "age in place" and remain in their own homes. Rebuilding Together Savannah works to ensure that as many of these families as possible do not have to make such difficult choices.


What repairs are done?

Home repair and rehabilitation by Rebuilding Together Savannah includes carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, painting, cleaning, roofing, yard work, and more using the skills of many volunteers.


Who is eligible for Rebuilding Together–Savannah assistance and how are homes referred?

Eligibility extends to low-income elderly or disabled persons, and may include families in need, who own their homes and are unable to make needed repairs. Individuals and families are referred through neighborhood associations, community agencies, faith-based organizations, family members, friends, and self-referral. Non-profit facilities may also be eligible to apply for our services.


Who pays for Rebuilding Together–Savannah repairs?

The cost of repairs is paid by Rebuilding Together Savannah through contributions from sponsors and individuals. There is no cost to the homeowner. Able homeowners and their families are asked to work along with volunteers in the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor. Our goal is to make a sustainable impact in partnership with the community.


Who sponsors Rebuilding Together–Savannah?

Sponsors of Rebuilding Together Savannah include large corporations, small businesses, service organizations and clubs, associations, churches and other faith-based groups. Cash and in-kind donations are welcomed. All contributions are fully tax deductible. Nationally, it is estimated that Rebuilding Together affiliates across the country will deliver nearly $100 million in market value each year.

Volunteers come from all walks of life! Trades people are always in demand and greatly appreciated for the time and talents they bring; however, Rebuilding Together Savannah needs people with many talents and abilities. Business leaders, students, elected officials, and policemen; government employees, community volunteers, and skilled craftsmen—all join together to help build a better community.
