Our program consists of repairs focusing on health and safety modifications as well as energy modifications for qualified homeowners, many of them elderly or disabled. We use the guidelines followed by the City of Savannah Housing Department to determine financial eligibility.
Repairs may include carpentry, electrical improvements, plumbing repairs, painting, cleaning, energy efficient modifications, roofing and yard cleanup. A primary concern is safety for the homeowner. The home is assessed for tripping hazards, needs for handrails, stairway improvements; bathroom safety such as grab bars, raised toilet, accessible shower/tub; and lighting.
Referrals come from neighborhood associations, senior citizen associations, community agencies, United Way's information and referral program, the City of Savannah housing department, neighbors, religious communities, and self-referral.
Home visits are made by the house selection committee teams to determine the needs of the homeowner, and the feasibility of the repairs. Sponsors provide teams of volunteer workers and a house captain to manage each project.
